Sustainability Legislation in Flux: Implementation Is Drawing Near
April also saw a lot of activity in the area of sustainability in Europe and the Netherlands. The EU is strongly committed to accelerating the energy transition to reduce dependence on fossil fuels. AccelerateEU is allocating resources to accelerate this transition, including through the upcoming electrification action plan. In addition, a proposal for the electrification of commercial vehicle fleets is under discussion. The Commission has decided to refrain from revising the REACH Regulation and has also confirmed that the EUDR timelines remain in place. At the same time, social ambitions are being strengthened through a new Gender Equality Strategy and the resumption of negotiations on social security coordination.
In the Netherlands, policy is shifting decisively toward steering through investments and conditions rather than new generic mandates. With the 2026 Spring Memorandum, the Climate and Energy Fund, and the Letter to Parliament on Making Industry More Sustainable, the focus is on investments in sustainable infrastructure, industrial transition, and electrification. At the same time, climate and nature risks are being more firmly enshrined in law and operational practices (Climate Change Act, Nature Restoration Regulation), and social regulations, such as the Wage Transparency Directive, require companies to prepare in a timely manner.
