About the client
With a network of 13 broadcasters, the Dutch Public Broadcasting Service (NPO), as a governing body, offers a pluralistic and varied range of media content that reflects our diverse society. The broadcasting associations focus on specific target audiences or represent social and philosophical movements.
About the project
The NPO asked us to assess the carbon footprint of both the NPO itself and all 13 of its member broadcasters. We conducted extensive calculations for Scopes 1, 2, and 3 to gain insight into total emissions.
This is an important step for an organization that is not only at the heart of society and reaches millions of people, but is also actively working to provide transparency regarding its environmental impact. The NPO demonstrates how public organizations, too, can play a pioneering role.
Work
We followed a consistent approach for all broadcasters, tailoring it to each broadcaster’s specific situation. Together with the stakeholders, we ensured that the calculations aligned with their work processes and available data. We first mapped out the emission sources and collected the necessary data, after which we calculated the carbon footprint. In addition, we documented the data sources, methodology, and requirements to ensure that the calculations remain reproducible in the future. Finally, we presented the results to internal stakeholders at the NPO and the broadcasters.
Result
This project provided the NPO and all its member broadcasters with insight into their environmental impact. In addition, they received templates that will allow them to repeat the calculations in the coming years.
